EVALUATION:

Author Leonard’s brains-over-brawn-but-brawn’s-are-needed attitude is as poetic and direct as the stance of Chili Palmer (“Get Shorty”).

FILM:

A weak 1967 western starring Paul Newman.  The simple story comes off as simple as opposed to moralistic.

WHICH IS BETTER?

The book.  Short and precise.  Elmore Leonard started in the genre of westerns.  (See 3:10 to Yuma.)  But here is a rarity for Leonard: our protagonist speaks to us in the 1st person.
