Nicolas Winding Refn
“Wingding’s Wonderful World”
Nicolas Winding Refn (in some circles, my circle, “Wingding”) is a director worth researching.
Back in 1996, his first feature “Pusher” put the Danish, stylish mind on the movie map. He pulled off a hand-held gritty film before hand-held was considered a commercial style. He continued his success with “Bleeder” and later “Fear X” starring John Turturro. (The documentary “Gambler” can be found within the “Pusher” trilogy and reveals the troubles that can come with rising success.)
Most recently is Wingding’s ninth film to date – “Drive” starring Ryan Gosling – which won him the Best Director award at the Cannes Film Festival of 2011. I mention this man because he’s inspired me to be passionate, patient, and follow crazy dreams.
“Wingding” isn’t a derogatory term but an easy-to-remember nickname. Or maybe his-birth given name Winding better suits Mr. Refn, for he’s constantly spinning his array of colors as his films spiral out of control.
Nicolas Winding Refn. Put him on your to-watch list.
